Procedure to access HKU Email Outside Campus Network via Authenticated SMTP Service (for Roaming Users)

If staff and students are outside HKU campus network, and the email program on PC (e.g. Outlook, Windows Mail) is configured to use "mail.hku.hk" as the outgoing SMTP server, they may have problems sending email because "mail.hku.hk" does not support open-relay of email from computers outside HKU network.

If staff and students are outside HKU campus network, they can set outgoing SMTP server to "smtproam.hku.hk".  HKU Portal UID and PIN will be asked for sending mail.

  1. This service is available to HKU staff and students only.

  2. Authenticated SMTP service is available to current staff and students only.
     
  3. The above set-up procedures apply only if your Internet Service Provider (ISP) does not block outgoing SMTP calls (i.e. not blocking TCP port no. 587).
