1. Introduction

We support, maintain, and manage the Moodle learning management system (LMS) to deliver online teaching and learning activities support for teachers, students and staff of all academic departments and faculties in the University.

Moodle is the only centrally supported LMS from September 1, 2012 onwards.

Users can access Moodle courses via HKU Portal > My eLearning tab > “Click to access your Moodle courses, if any” link.

Moodle platform is online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including holidays.

Consultative inquiry support is available during normal IT Services support hours. 


2. Guidelines on the Creation of Moodle Courses

  1. Moodle courses will automatically be created for all academic courses which have been defined in the Student Information System (SIS). Teachers’ and students’ enrollments for the corresponding Moodle courses will also be automatically handled.
     
  2. Teachers or staff can apply for extra Moodle courses by filling out the electronic form found in the eLearning tab of the HKU Portal.

3. Procedures on Accessing Moodle Courses

Users can access Moodle courses via HKU Portal > My eLearning tab.


4. Getting Help and Support

Consultative inquiry support is available during normal IT Services support hours. 


5. Moodle Trainings for Teachers and Staff

We run basic Moodle hands-on training courses for teachers and the Faculties’ support staff, helping them get started quickly with practical Moodle skills. These courses emphasize on hands-on experience, and are conducted regularly. The topics are designed to cover an array of Moodle features with different levels of expertise. The duration of each course is one hour and two courses are offered every week, allowing interested participants with more flexible attendance.

6. HKU Panopto Lecture Capture Solution

Panopto is the centrally managed lecture capture solution adopted in HKU. Panopto recordings (called “Pancasts”) can be easily linked to Moodle courses. Panopto supports recording of audio and video input to any laptop, synchronized with Microsoft PowerPoint presentation and desktop screencast of your Windows/Macintosh. The lecture theatres in the Centennial Campus are being equipped with a ceiling camera and web-cam attached to the laptop in the classroom for video recording. The recorded Pancasts can be easily viewed over the web, especially from linked Moodle courses.
