8. Learning Environment

ITS manages the central learning environment of the University which comprises classrooms, lecture theatres and learning commons. A wide variety of the latest IT and audio visual facilities are available for use by students and staff. PC software packages including word processing, webpage design, graphical and multimedia tools, and statistical analysis are available on communal PCs at the learning commons.  Laser printing services are also provided in the learning commons at minimal charges. Apart from the central learning environment managed by ITS, PC laboratories are also available at the faculties. 1. Learning Commons

The Learning Commons is a campus hub equipped with modern learning facilities that encourages and facilities individual and group study. Here are the learning commons available for use by students and staff:

The 6,000 m2 Chi Wah Learning Commons (智華館) is located at the podium levels of the University’s new Centennial Campus.  The facility, which spreads over three levels, is a technology-rich, shared or common space in which students, teachers and others can come together to interact, and participate in various kinds of activities held there.  There are a number of entrances to the Learning Commons, one of which is on the Ground (G) floor, the courtyard level, with a spiral staircase connecting levels 1 and 2 (CPD-1 and CPD-2) of the Learning Commons vertically.

The Oval is located at the first floor of Knowles Building. The facility is a common space in which students, teachers and others can come together to interact, and participate in various kinds of activities held there.

The Curve is located at the first and second floors of K.K. Leung Building. The facility is a common space in which students, teachers and others can come together to interact, and participate in various kinds of activities held there.

2. Communal PCs

Communal PCs are available for use in the Chi Wah Learning Commons as well as Room 110 (KB110) in The Oval when this room is not booked for classes. There are a total of 184 Windows PC and 11 Mac computers in the Chi Wah Learning Commons and 36 PCs in KB-110. They are network connected with commonly used software installed. Students can also use the faculty-based PC Laboratories.

3. PC availability application

PC availability application is built to facilitate staff and students to look for communal PC’s available for use in the Chi Wah Learning Commons, The Oval and some of the faculty-based  PC Laboratories. The web version of the PC Availability application is accessible via the ITS website > Help > PC Availability. You can also access the PC Availability mobile application (for Android or Apple iOS devices) via HKU App > Staff corner or Student corner (Login with HKU Portal UID and PIN required) > Learning Facilities > PC Availability.

4. Laser Printing Service

A print-anywhere printing service called uPrint is supported by ITS for black & white and color printing and copying (copying is available at some designated printers). Students and staff can use uPrint at the Chi Wah Learning Commons, The Oval, The Curve and some faculty-based PC laboratories. Users can submit print job from any networked desktop PC/notebook PC/ Mobile devices with uPrint printer driver or app installed and pick up the printout at any uPrint printer. 5. Purchase Additional Printing Units

100 printing units will be allocated to every new student account upon creation. For non-fresh undergraduate students, they will also receive 100 units before the start of each academic year.

Additional printing units can be purchased using Octopus Card at the Add Value Machine (AVM) in the Chi Wah Learning Commons, The Oval and the Medical Library at LG1,/F William M.W. Mong Block, 21 Sassoon Road. The cost of $30 for 100 printing units.

Note: All students must settle all outstanding liability of printing units incurred before graduation. Unused printing units will be expired upon graduation.
