1. Email Alias for Staff

An "E-mail Alias" is another name for your email address which is easier for your friends to remember e.g. "chan-tai-man@hku.hk". An account name is limited to 8 characters while the email alias can have 9 to 32 characters with any combination of alphabets, numbers and special characters "-",  ".",  "_".

An email alias is not another email account, but instead, an email address that will deliver emails to your email account. Therefore, the email alias cannot be used to login your email account where the account name is required.

To set up an email alias, please visit:

  • HKU Portal > Type "Alias" in the Search field > Click the link "Change Email Alias".

To change your sender email address, please visit:

  • HKU Portal > Type "Register Name" in the Search field > Click the link "Register Name/EAddress in Mail".

2. Email Alias for Students using HKU Connect email service

An email alias is another name for your email address which is easier for your email recipients to remember e.g. "chan-tai-man@connect.hku.hk".  An account name is limited to 8 characters while an email alias can have 9 to 32 characters with combination of letters, numbers and special characters "-",  "." and  "_".

Please note that an email alias is not another email account, but instead, an email address that will deliver emails to your HKU Connect email account.  Therefore, the email alias cannot be used to login your HKU Portal/email account where the account name is required.

When a student set up an email alias, both emailAlias@hku.hk and emailAlias@connect.hku.hk will be created.  The alias emailAlias@connect.hku.hk can be used after graduation. However, emailAlias@hku.hk will expire once the user's student status expires.  Thus, the email alias emailAlias@connect.hku.hk is recommended to be used as your sender email address.

To set up an email alias, please visit:

  • HKU Portal > Type "Alias" in the Search field > Click the link "Change Email Alias".

3. Email Alias for Graduates using HKU Connect email service

An email alias is a forwarding email address which is easier for your email recipients to remember, e.g. "chan-tai-man@connect.hku.hk".  While the current HKU Connect email account name is limited to 8 characters, an email alias now allows 9 to 32 characters with combination of letters, numbers and special characters "-",  "." and  "_".

Please note that an email alias is not another email account.   Instead, it is an email address that forwards emails to your HKU Connect email account.   Therefore, the email alias cannot be used to login your email account where the account name is required.   You can also use the email alias as your sender email address.
