Seminars on Web Accessibility on November 10 and November 17

ITS will be hosting two seminars on web accessibility to raise the awareness of University members on this important subject. These seminars will be conducted during the Equal Opportunity Festival 2014 to be arranged by the Equal Opportunity Unit on November 5-21, 2014.

The first seminar is aimed to give general users an overview of the concept of web accessibility and the essential elements in designing barrier-free, accessible websites for all people including those who are visually impaired or have certain movement limitations. The other seminar is a more in-depth and technical one for departmental webmasters or web administrators to acquire the knowhow and techniques to enhance their departmental websites to conform to the common accessibility requirements.

The course agendas and registration details are as follows -

1. Seminar on web accessibility for general users

The following topics will be covered in the seminar:

  • What is web accessibility?
  • Understanding the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI)
  • Designing accessible websites (Visual Elements) 
  • Testing techniques for web accessibility

No web design/editing skill is required to attend this seminar.

2. Seminar on web accessibility for webmasters or web administrators

This seminar covers the requirements stipulated under the Web Accessibility Recognition Scheme co-organized by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) and the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC).  The aim of this scheme is to encourage the adoption of accessibility design to facilitate access to online information and services by all segments of the community, including persons with disabilities.   Departmental webmaster and web administrators who possess basic web editing knowledge and are responsible for website design and/or maintenance are welcome to join.

The following topics will be covered in the seminar:

  • Introduction to Web Accessibility Recognition Scheme (co-organized by OGCIO & EOC)
  • Judging Criteria and skills on how to fulfill these accessibility requirements for the Website Stream – Silver and Gold Award
  • Testing techniques for web accessibility
