Getting Started

1. HKU Portal account

HKU Portal UID (UID) is a unique user identification (user name) for using the central IT services.  These include access to personal and departmental information through “Self Service” (SS) and “Manager Self Service” (MSS), online courses, network services, email, library resources and other online services provided by various departments.

New staff will receive the “Instructions on Computer Account Application” together with their appointment letter sent by the Human Resource Section of Registry.   Please follow the steps to apply for the HKU Portal account.

For new staff who does not receive the “Instructions on Computer Account Application”, they can submit application via http://www.its.hku.hk/services/account/application/staff-hkid (accessible within HKU campus network).

2. Network service

For WiFi and fixed network connection, a one-time configuration/network card registration is required.  Click here for details (http://www.its.hku.hk/services/network/connect).

Before configuration, staff can also use “Wi-Fi.HK via HKU” (for immediate access only that requires no registration and it runs in an unsecured mode within limited bandwidth).

3. Moodle courses

Moodle is the University’s central Learning Management System (LMS). Moodle courses are automatically created for students for every course they enrolled.  Moodle courses are accessible via the My eLearning tab under HKU Portal.

There are useful Moodle resources including FAQs, online user guides and a series of short video tutorials to help teachers to get started with Moodle.    For other details, please click here.

4. Email service

A University email account is automatically created for each new staff member upon the successful application of HKU Portal account.  The email address is yourChosenUID@hku.hk.   Staff can access email via MyEmail tab of HKU Portal or other email clients (add the link to Email page).  The email account is running on Microsoft Exchange platform offering 5GB disk storage.

Staff can set to receive bulk email messages from selected University departments only.  Please click here to see the procedures.
