Opening of the second floor of the Chi Wah Learning Commons (智華館)

Dear Colleagues and Students,

We are most pleased to announce the opening of the second floor of the Chi Wah Learning Commons (智華館) on 9 October 2012 (Tuesday).

The first floor of the Learning Commons, which was opened on 17 September 2012 along with the commencement of the 2012/13 academic year, has been very well received by students.  We expect the second floor to gain popularity among students in practically no time once opened.

The following table shows the opening hours for both levels of the Learning Commons for the period 9 October 2012 - 11 November 2012 -

Days of the Week First floor

Second floor

Monday – Friday 08:00 – 20:00 08:00 – 20:00
Saturday 08:00 – 13:00 Closed
Sunday and Holiday Closed Closed

The second floor of the Learning Commons exhibits a contemporary style, and is more colourful than the first floor.  It provides additional spaces, including a reading room; group study rooms and diner booths of different designs; areas with bean bags of various shapes and colours; and single workstations, for individual and collaborative learning.  Like the first floor, the second floor is well provided with wired and wireless (WiFi) networking capability, audio-visual facilities are available in most group study rooms, all-in-one desktop PCs are dispersed across the floor, and there are A4/A3 printers for colour and black/white printing and copying.  Another video wall exists on the second floor for event broadcasting.

Unique to the second floor is an area designated as a Student Advisory Services Zone where students may seek advice from a number of departments, namely the Academic Advising Office (AAO), Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS), Centre for Applied English Studies (CAES) and the University Libraries. The Zone will commence operation on 15 October 2012 (Monday).  More details will be announced later.

As some of you may notice, there are still some defects here and there inside the Learning Commons.  We are taking steps to rectify them.  Moreover, we will continue to improve the facilities and services inside as an ongoing effort.
