Rename of “HKU Open WiFi” Service to “Wi-Fi.HK via HKU” on 1 Dec 2014

Dear colleagues and students,

HKU Open WiFi is a WiFi service provided for use by visitors on campus.  This WiFi service is for quick and immediate network access on campus within a limited bandwidth capacity.  Visitors can use it without login and prior configuration of their mobile devices.

The University is supporting the HKSAR Government’s "City-wide Wi-Fi for the Public and Visitors" initiative as set out in the "2014 Digital 21 Strategy".   The objectives of this initiative are

  • to make it easier for the public and visitors to find and use the free Wi-Fi services in Hong Kong;
  • to stimulate the development of public Wi-Fi in Hong Kong; and
  • to further advance Hong Kong's position as a highly connected city in the world.

For further details on Wi-Fi.HK service, please visit the Wi-Fi.HK website.

To support this initiative, ITS will convert the HKU Open WiFi service into Wi-Fi.HK service.  The major change arising from this conversion is that the WiFi SSID (Service Set Identifier) for use by visitors on campus will be changed from "HKU Open WiFi" to "Wi-Fi.HK via HKU" starting from 8:00 am on 1 December 2014 (Monday).

For enquiries on the above, please contact us at ithelp@hku.hk.

Thank you for your attention.
