Microsoft Windows 10 Released on 29 July 2015

Dear colleagues

(A) About Microsoft Windows 10

Microsoft has just released Windows 10 on 29 July 2015 which comes with a new browser, Microsoft Edge.

According to Microsoft, “Windows 10 is familiar and easy to use, with lots of similarities to Windows 7 including the Start menu. It starts up and resumes fast, has more built-in security to help keep you safe, and is designed to work with software and hardware you already have.”

We have arranged a testing on the HKU Portal applications based on the Windows 10 Insider Preview version in July 2015.  It is found out that some Portal applications are not fully compatible to run on Windows 10 and its latest browser Microsoft Edge, such as MyEmail and some applications supported by FEO (see http://www.its.hku.hk/documentation/guide/infosys/hkuportal#os for details).  Departments are thus advised to consider the application compatibility, in particular the frequently used applications, before deciding to upgrade their PCs to the latest Windows 10.

The volume licensing versions of Windows 10 (Windows 10 Professional/Enterprise/Education 32-bit/64-bit) are now available for use by departments subscribing to Microsoft Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES, previously called Microsoft Campus Agreement) who are entitled to free Windows upgrade for their departmental PCs.  They can get a copy of Windows 10 media from ITS at HK$50 each by sending us an ITS Order Form (please specify the version and operating system type i.e. 32-bit/64-bit that you wish to order in the Order Form).

For personal PCs running Windows 7/8.1 (except Enterprise version), you can reserve upgrade by visiting https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-upgrade.

The specifications of Windows 10, including the system requirements and feature depreciation, can be found at the following link-

To understand and feel how Windows 10 is working, you can visit Microsoft’s emulator page at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/emulator.

(B) Internet Explorer Support Lifecycle Policy

We would also like to take this opportunity to notify departments on the recent Internet Explorer browser support lifecycle policy announced by Microsoft.  Beginning 12 January 2016, only the most current version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical support and security update from Microsoft, as shown in the table below. In short, users are required to upgrade to the latest Internet Explorer version 11 if their PCs are running Windows 7 and 8.1 by the new policy effective date.

Departments running on an older version of Internet Explorer, such as Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), are recommended to plan migrating to one of the following supported operating systems and browser combinations by 12 January 2016.  See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/gp/microsoft-internet-explorer?wa=wsignin1.0 for details.
