Step 1: Create and activate an AWS Account

  1. Visit Amazon Web Services home page at and click the Create an AWS Account button at top-right corner of the page.

  2. On the Create an AWS account page, enter your HKU email address (educators/teaching staff:; students:, password (a new password at your choice for login to AWS) and account name (please put in your Portal UID unless it has been taken up by others), and then click Continue.

  3. On the Contact Information page,
    1. For students, please choose Personal; for teaching staff, please choose Professional.
      Note: The two account types are identical in functionality
    2. Enter the required information.
    3. Read the AWS Customer Agreement, and then check the box.
    4. Click Create Account and Continue.

  1. On the Payment Information page, enter your credit card information, billing address and then click Secure Submit.

    Note: Please note this is a compulsory step to complete the AWS account registration. After registered and joined the AWS Educate, you can redeem credits to use AWS resources, and your expenses may be covered by those credits. For details, please refer to Step 2: Register and join AWS Educate and Step 3: Redeem AWS Educate Credits.

    There will be US$1.00 charge hold after completion of your AWS account registration. This is a security measure to ensure your credit card is valid. This charge hold will be cancelled within a few days (the time varies depending on the credit card issuer).

  2. On the Phone Verification page, enter your Phone number, complete the Security Check, and then click Call me Now.

  3. The AWS automated system will call you. When prompted, enter the 4-digit number from the AWS website on your phone keypad. After the verification is success, click Continue.

  4. On the Select a Support Plan page, click Free button under "Basic Plan".

  5. After your AWS account is activated, you will receive a sign-up confirmation email from AWS.

    Note: It might take up to 24 hours for AWS to activate your account.

Step 2: Register and join AWS Educate

  1. Visit AWS Management Console site at and sign in with your HKU email address (educators/teaching staff:; students: and password (the password you input in Step 1b).

  2. After signed in, select My Account from the top-right menu and jot down your 12-digit Account Id.

  3. Visit Apply for AWS Educate page at For students, please choose Students; for teaching staff, please choose Educators.

  4. Under the application form,
    1. For Institution Name, enter "The University of Hong Kong".
    2. For Email, enter your HKU email address (educators/teaching staff:; students:
      It is important that you enter the correct email address as AWS will use this email address to differentiate whether you are an educator or a student. The application form required to be filled in by educators and students is different.  
    3. Fill in the form (please leave the Promo Code blank at this stage), and click on the I’m not a robot reCAPTCHA.
    4. Click NEXT.

  1. On the next page, fill in your 12-digit AWS account ID, and then click NEXT.

  2. You will receive an email with a link to verify your email address.

  3. When you received the AWS Educate verification email, click the URL to confirm your email address.

  4. Scroll through and read the Terms and Conditions, check the I Agree box and then click SUBMIT.

  5. A page will show your application is under review. You should receive a welcome email which will include an AWS Educate Promotional Credit within 3 business days.

    Applications submitted by educators will be vetted by AWS individually. AWS will contact the educators in case additional information is required. AWS will reject an educator application if the information provided is incomplete or cannot satisfy AWS’ requirements of an educator.

Step 3: Redeem AWS Educate Credits

  1. After you AWS Educate application is approved, login AWS Management Console site at with your AWS account, select My Billing Dashboard from the top-right menu.

  2. Select Credits from the left menu.
  3. Under the Credits page,
    1. Enter the Promo Code from your welcome email.
    2. Complete the Security Check.
    3. Click Redeem.


  1. Once your credit code is validated, the credits will be added into your AWS account immediately and automatically. You can view the list of eligible services for your AWS credits by clicking the See complete list link in the table. You can always return to this Credits page to review the details of the AWS credits, such as remaining balance.

    Note: Promotional Credit may be used only for fees and charges incurred on or after the date you apply the applicable Promotional Credit code to your account and only for the specific Services designated by AWS (collectively, "Eligible Services"). You may not use Promotional Credit for any fees or charges for Reserved Instances, Amazon Mechanical Turk, AWS Support, AWS Marketplace, Amazon Route 53 domain name registration or transfer, any upfront fee for any Service, or for any other Services as may be designated by AWS from time to time (collectively, "Ineligible Services"). Promotional Credit will not be applied against any fees or charges for use of any Ineligible Services, and your AWS account will be billed for all fees and charges for use of any Ineligible Services.
