802.11b was the standard of the first generation of WiFi back in 1999. Its maximum theoretical speed is 11Mbps, which is much slower than the latest WiFi standard 802.11ac that supports a speed of above 1Gbps.
Due to technology obsolescence, mobile devices that only support 802.11b WiFi standard should have been retired. Since the support of this outdated WiFi standard will severely degrade the network performance of other WiFi devices using faster WiFi standards, such as 802.11g and 802.11n, on the same network, we have decided to disable 802.11b support on HKU’s WiFi network with effect from January 1, 2015.
