Update on Implementation of Two-Factor Authentication for Central IT Services

We are pleased to provide another update regarding the progress on implementing two-factor authentication (2FA) for adding security protection in authenticating access to HKU Virtual Private Network (HKUVPN) service.

Since its launch on January 4, 2016, over 5,000 staff and students have registered for using the 2FA service.  To ensure users can continue using HKUVPN service without interruption, we have sent emails to active HKUVPN users in the past month inviting them to register for 2FA which is required for using HKUVPN service after March 31, 2016.   From April 1, 2016 onwards, the old HKUVPN login mechanism of using only HKU Portal UID/PIN can no longer be accepted and users without 2FA registered will not be able to use HKUVPN.

For staff and students who have not yet registered but require to use HKUVPN, please register 2FA now.  The registration and configuration procedures are described below-

User Registration 

Please go to HKU Portal (type “2FA” in the Search field > click the link “Register to Use 2FA”) and fill in the information as required.  Staff whose HKU Portal account would have access to information related to personal data of students and/or other staff members can elect the use of a Mobile App on a mobile device to get the token code.  Visiting, honorary and hourly-paid staff will use only the alternate email address that they have registered with ITS to receive the token code. 

For those using Mobile App, they can retrieve a token code any time through the App.  Others will receive the token code sent to their registered alternate email address every time when connecting to use HKUVPN.

Software Installation

  1. Download the new HKUVPN client and follow the steps described  to complete the one-time configuration.
  2. Mobile App installation (only applicable to those staff users who choose to get the token code through Mobile App) through App Store (for Apple iOS devices) or Play Store (for Android devices) or Microsoft Store (for Windows Mobile devices)

After registration and software installation, then you can, according to the type of your device, login HKUVPN with 2FA by following the Connection Procedures at http://www.its.hku.hk/documentation/guide/network/remote/hkuvpn2fa/connect.

Briefing Sessions

Two briefing sessions (identical in contents) will be held to assist users understand more about the 2FA mechanism, registration and configuration procedures on using HKUVPN with 2FA.  Details are as follows:
