Microsoft has announced that Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will go out of support on January 14, 2020. End of support means users of these software versions will no longer receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options, or online technical content updates from Microsoft.
Since running unsupported and unpatched products are vulnerable to security risks, please take appropriate action to upgrade the PCs and/or servers in your department if they are still running Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 as soon as possible before the end of support date. For more details on the end of support announcements, please visit Microsoft’s webpage at
Departments can make use of the following provisions offered under the SMARTER@HKU initiative to facilitate the upgrade and enjoy efficiency gains:
- Virtual PCs (VPCs) – VPCs is a good alternative to desktop PCs. Departments do not need to place a purchase order, configure or install anything before they can use the VPCs. Colleagues can readily use Windows 10 and a common set of software with a 100GB personal drive through a small VPC box upon delivery. This is a centrally provisioned facility that requires no additional cost from departments. Simply apply using our online form CF85.
If you would like to understand more how VPCs can help your department, you can:
- Watch the following videos on the SMARTER@HKU website:
Attend one of our workshops to get hands-on experience in using VPCs. Click here for registration; or
- Discuss with our colleague Mr Chris Wong (email@example.com / 3917 8705) to see how VPC can fit the needs of your department.
Departments who wish to keep using their existing departmental PCs running Windows 7 can upgrade to the latest versions of Windows and the upgrade right is covered by the University’s central subscription to Microsoft Enrollment for Education Solutions.
- ITS Cloud – ITS Cloud is a cost-saving and efficient alternative to physical servers. With ITS Cloud, departments are no longer required to consider and purchase physical servers and maintain the server facility and the required IT environment themselves. Departments can request for a private cloud server with 2 virtual CPUs, 4GB memory and 100GB disk storage supported by central funding with Windows Server 2016 pre-installed. The server is ready to use upon provision. Simply apply by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please feel free to discuss with our Mr Jacky Pang (email@example.com / 3917 2486) for any advice on the facility setup and other chargeable options for additional resources requirements.
To mitigate the risk of hacking by leveraging these sunsetting products’ security vulnerabilities, all Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 machines must be removed from the campus network or otherwise protected by specific anti-intrusion means on or before January 14, 2020. In case you have any questions on the above, please feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or 3917 0123.
