Microsoft has announced that Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will go out of support on January 14, 2020. End of support means users of these software versions will no longer receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options, or online technical content updates from Microsoft.
To avoid the risk of hacking led by these sunsetting products’ security vulnerabilities, we have reminded departments in May 2019 that all Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 machines must be removed from the campus network or otherwise protected by effective anti-intrusion means on or before January 14, 2020. Departments are urged to upgrade all of their PCs and/or servers soon before the end of support date. For more details on the end of support announcements, please visit Microsoft’s webpage at
We would encourage departments to make use of the following solutions provided by ITS to help in addressing the end-of-life issue of the Windows software:
Virtual PCs (VPCs) – VPCs is a good alternative to desktop PCs. Departments do not need to place a purchase order, configure or install anything before they can use the VPCs. Colleagues can readily use Windows 10 and a common set of software with a 100GB personal drive through a small VPC box upon delivery. This is a centrally provisioned facility that requires no additional cost from departments. Simply apply using our online form CF85.

Departments who wish to keep using their existing departmental PCs running Windows 7 can upgrade to the latest versions of Windows and the upgrade right is covered by the University’s central subscription to Microsoft Enrollment for Education Solutions.
ITS Cloud – ITS Cloud is a cost-saving and efficient alternative to physical servers. By adopting the ITS Cloud solution, departments would be relieved from the burden of purchasing, setting up, hosting and maintaining physical server facilities within their premises. Departments can request a centrally provided ITS Cloud server (with 2 virtual CPUs, 4GB memory and 100GB disk storage with Windows Server 2016 pre-installed) by sending the request by email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
