I cannot connect to Campus Network (LAN) via cable connection. What should I do?

Please check the following:

  1. Pleaes check if you have already registered your network card by going to HKU Portal (type “network card” in the Search field and click the link “Register Network Cards”). If not, please register it via the same webpage.
  2. There may be problems with the IP address of your PC.

Please check

(i) If your PC is configured to “obtain an IP address automatically“.

(ii) If your PC has previously been assigned with an IP address. Click here to see how to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server.

For accessing the campus network services outside the campus, you are required to first connect to the HKU Virtual Private Network (HKUVPN) (see HKU VPN 2FA user guide for the configuration and connection steps).

There could be cases users may not be able to connect to HKUVPN even though their HKU Portal account is in normal state.  If such case happens and you are using Internet Explorer, please click Tools > Internet Options > Connections > select “Never dial a connection”.

Computer and network abuse

Network and computer abuse includes activities such as dissemination of computer viruses/Trojan horses, spam, copyright infringement, port scanning, using excessive network bandwidth, spying and hacking of others’ computers, etc.

If you receive a message from ITS on COMPUTER or NETWORK ABUSE which stops you from accessing the network service, you must clean up the virus or Trojan horses and send email to abuse@hku.hk with the full virus scan log stating what actions you have taken to fix the problem and to avoid the same problem from happening again.
