Discontinuation of Support for 10Mbps Wired Network Devices in Campus Network

Discontinuation of Support for 10Mbps Wired Network Devices in Campus Network

As the HKU Campus Network had evolved into a high-speed and modernized network, legacy low-speed network devices may experience unstable and degraded network performance when co-existing with high-speed devices. Additionally, these low-speed devices may negatively impact the overall network performance. In view of this,  it is decided that support for 10Mbps Wired Network Devices in the campus network will be discontinued effective from September 1, 2024.

There are about 200 units of 10Mbps devices currently connected to the campus network. They are usually access control system panels, sensors with data loggers, card readers, etc.

Recommendations for users:

  • Purchase network devices with higher speed network adapters.
  • Upgrade their existing network devices with higher speed network adapters
  • Work with their vendors for a better network solution to avoid performance degradation

Users are also welcome to discuss with ITS for their possible solutions.
