Migration of Dynamic IP Assignments from Public to Private IP Addresses

Migration of Dynamic IP Assignments from Public to Private IP Addresses

ITS noted some network security incidents occurred in campus recently. The incidents had been reviewed and some recommendations had been worked out to be implemented in order to minimize network security risk. Regarding dynamic IP assignments for client workstations, it is recommended to assign private IP addresses as far as possible, instead of public IP addresses, to minimize the exposure to malicious activities from the Internet which target to HKU public IP addresses.

ITS scheduled the migration to be carried out on 30 Apr 2024. The migration should be transparent to users and will not affect the normal network operations or access to network services.

In case users or departments may have access control lists for servers or network services which may be affected by the migration, they are advised to update such access control lists accordingly. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

In addition to IPv4 security, IPv6 security will be strengthened as well. IPv6 address autoconfiguration will be disabled by 28 Mar 2024. Please note that client workstation will not get an IPv6 address automatically from the network by default after this date.
