Effective March 1st , 2024, new M365 storage policy was implemented all new students. No change have been made to the storage arrangements for students enrolled before this date.
A recent review of HKU student usage on the Connect M365 tenant has revealed that over 50% of the total storage is occupied by just 5% of students for those used more than 100GB storage. To promote fair usage and ensure optimal performance for all students, the following new storage policy will be implemented by August 2025.
New Storage Policy for Students
Exchange Online (mailbox) Quota | OneDrive Quota | Teams Site/ SharePoint Online Site Quota | Max no. Of owning sites | |
Student Personal account or Teams site created before Aug 2025 | 15GB | 100GB | 100GB | 5 |
Suggested methods for freeing up disk space on OneDrive, Teams Site, and Exchange Online:
- Delete unnecessary files: Remove old or unused files and folders.
- Empty the Recycle Bin: Ensure that the Recycle Bin is emptied regularly.
- Review shared files: Delete any shared files that are no longer needed.
- Transfer important data to other storage: Transfer large, important files to alternative storage solutions. For those RPG students require additional storage for research purposes, you can submit a storage request to ithelp@hku.hk. Additional research related storage space may be arranged after reviewing the details of the research project details and obtaining endorsement from supervisors.
In anticipation of the upcoming Microsoft M365 storage policy effective July 2026, further adjustments to the storage quota policies for students at the Connect tenant will be updated and implemented in the forthcoming months.
