ITS provides the university-wide HKU GenAI web application and HKU ITS API Developer Portal for HKU staff and students to access generative AI resources for their teaching and learning, work, and research tasks.

Quotas
Staff can make unlimited requests to text models and 70 requests to image models per week, unless otherwise stated in the information panel from the HKU GenAI App. Additional rate limits and daily quotas apply as stated in the descriptions from the API Developer Portal.
Students have monthly 500k AI Credits which will be replenished on the first day of each month. AI Credits apply across both HKU GenAI App and the API Developer Portal.
Staff and RPG students may apply for a self-pay Azure subscription for additional ChatGPT/DeepSeek usage for their faculties/departments. Contact ITS Help Desk for details and application. Not applicable to Gemini, GLM, and Qwen models.
AI plagiarism and research integrity
Staff and students may refer to university policies on generative AI, notably

Students should note additional regulations on generative AI use from their course instructors. Failure to comply with them may result in plagiarism and disciplinary actions.
Privacy
The HKU GenAI App provides two options to save user chats, images, topics, notes, files, and system prompts. To avoid data retention, use Temporary Chat at the top right or turn on Temporary Chat by Default in Settings > Interface > Chat.
- Users may choose to save content in the browser storage.
- Users may also choose to save content in the ITS-maintained database. If you do not wish that the content is retained in the database, do not choose database saving.

- Users are strictly advised against sharing personally identifiable or confidential university information with web-search-enabled prompts due to product training and data retention involved.

Data Protection
If you use personal data, whether your own or that of others, in your interactions with HKU GenAI App and APIs in HKU ITS API Developer Portal, you are responsible for
- obtaining explicit consent from the data subject(s) for the use and processing of their data with AI,
- exercising data masking practices, and
- ensuring compliance with applicable data protection guidelines, frameworks, and governance policies.
