Gradescope Assignment

Gradescope is an assessment platform that allows instructors to create, manage, and grade assignments efficiently, supporting both online and paper-based submissions. It enables consistent grading using rubrics, faster feedback delivery, and detailed analytics on student performance.

Gradescope allows instructors to grade paper-based exams, quizzes, bubble sheets, programming assignments (graded automatically or manually) and lets you create online assignments that students can answer right on Gradescope.

Gradescope Assignment on Moodle

Important: Assignment Creation via Moodle

Gradescope 1.3 is an external tool integrated with Moodle. To ensure that assignments are properly linked and accessible to students, assignments must be created within the Moodle course.

Assignments created directly on the Gradescope website (gradescope.com) will not be linked to the Moodle course, and therefore will not be displayed to students on Moodle platform.

In addition, grade synchronization to the Moodle Gradebook is only supported for assignments created via Moodle. If an assignment is created outside Moodle, grades will not be synced, and manual grade entry will be required.

Assignment types

  • Homework/Problem Set: Instructors specify a window of time during which students can submit their work. Students upload their work via their devices.
  • Exam / Quiz: An instructor-uploaded assignment where students answer in designated regions.
  • Bubble Sheet: Using a Gradescope Bubble Sheet template, instructors can mark correct answers and have submissions automatically graded.
  • Programming Assignment: Instructors can grade student code with autograders or manually grade each submission.
  • Online Assignment: Instructors create questions on Gradescope, and students can submit responses online.

How to Grade Submissions in Gradescope

After students have submitted their work, instructors can use Gradescope’s grading tools to efficiently evaluate submissions and provide feedback.

  1. Navigate to the Gradescope assignment in your Moodle course.
  2. You will be directed to the Gradescope platform (gradescope.com).
  3. Instructors can view all submissions from the Manage Submissions tab.
  4. Choose a student submission to begin grading.
  5. Create rubrics for the questions if applicable. Instructors can do this now or while grading. (Reference: Creating rubrics).
  6. Gradescope allows instructors to grade submissions by question rather than by student.
  7. Once grading is completed, select Review Grades to verify grades and feedback. Instructors can click publish grades to release the results to students (Reference: Reviewing grades).*

  8. After grades are published, students can view their scores and feedback in Gradescope.

Remarks:

* For Gradescope assignments created through Moodle using Gradescope LTI 1.3, grades can be synchronized with the Moodle Gradebook.

  1. Ensure grading has been completed in Gradescope.
  2. Publish the grades in Gradescope.
  3. Grades can be synchronized to the corresponding Moodle Gradebook item by clicking “Post Grades to https://moodle.hku.hk“.

Important: Grade synchronization is only available for assignments that were created through the Moodle course using the Gradescope LTI 1.3 integration. Assignments created directly on the Gradescope website (gradescope.com) are not linked to Moodle and will not support automatic grade synchronization.
