Procedure to configure iPhone/iPad to access "HKU" WiFi

A. Pre-requisite

To access "HKU" WiFi, you must:

  • For HKU Portal account created before 5 June 2009, register to enable eduroam access by login HKU Portal > Campus Information Services > Central IT Services > Register to use WiFi service.
  • For HKU Portal account created on or after 5 June 2009, no registration is required.
  • Your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad device must be upgraded to iPhone 2.0 (or above) Software Update. The Software Update supports WPA2 Enterprise with 802.1x authentication which is necessary for connecting to "HKU" WiFi.

    To check Software Update version in your iPhone/iPod Touch device, tap Settings > General > About.

B. Configuration Procedure

The configuration steps and screenshots are tested and based on iPhone.

  1. Turn on your iPhone/iPod Touch and navigate to the home screen. Locate and Tap the Settings icon.

  2. Tap the Wi-Fi button.

  3. While you on HKU campus, ensure that WiFi is turned ON and tap HKU.

  4. Enter your username and password.

  5. Tap Join
  6. You will be asked to accept a certificate the first time you connect. Click Trust to accept the digital certificate.

  7. You should now see HKU as your selected network.

C. Security Note

  1. Since HKU Portal UID and PIN are employed to login "HKU" WiFi, as a better password security measure, you would be asked to change your HKU Portal PIN if you have not changed it for six months.
  2. For iPhone and iPod Touch, when a user login "HKU" WiFi successfully, the HKU Portal UID and PIN will be cached in the device so that the UID/PIN are not required for sequential connection to "HKU" WiFi. While it is convenient, however, this can also be a security threat; for example, any transfer of a user’s device to another person without clearing the cached password would potentially expose his HKU Portal UID/PIN to other people.

    To clear cached password, tap Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the arrow next to "HKU" WiFi network. Then tap Forget this Network.
